Region 2: Kwanzaa Celebration & Education Session

Region 2, Coalition of Racialized Workers (CoRW) is inviting you to come out and learn how each day of Kwanzaa is dedicated to one principle that reflects communitarian values of the African diaspora.

Kwanzaa is a cultural, non-religious celebration that brings people of African descent together to foster pride, identity, and connection while celebrating Black history and values. Inspired by African harvest festivals, Kwanzaa is based on seven core principles known as the Nguzo Saba. The name Kwanzaa comes from the Swahili phrase matunda ya kwanza, meaning “first fruits.”

Observed by people of all faiths, Kwanzaa is often celebrated alongside other holidays. Traditions may include decorating with African fabrics and the Pan‑African colours (red, black, and green), lighting the Kinara with seven candles (Mishumaa Saba), sharing food, and exchanging meaningful or educational gifts (Zawadi). A common greeting during the holiday is “Joyous Kwanzaa.”
