OPSEU’s head office was a hub of activity on March 21, 22 and March 25, 26 as 46 local presidents attended one of two orientation sessions held back to back. The orientation sessions had participants from across the seven regions of Ontario, coming together to network, learn about how OPSEU functions and gain a better understanding of what their roles and responsibilities are. The presidents represented members from the Ontario Public Service, the Broader Public Services as well as the College of Applied Arts and Technology.
Local presidents were given the opportunity to meet with OPSEU staff from twelve different units who offered advice and strategies on dealing with everyday issues such as grievances, local finances, health and safety, negotiations and effective communication. The local presidents sharpened their skills using case studies about human rights, health and safety, harassment and the duty to accommodate. The participants shared their experiences in handling difficult situations, listening effectively and resolving issues in their locals.

Learning from each other, the new presidents shared their tips for recruiting new stewards and keeping them involved in the local. These tips included focusing on education, building on honesty and transparency, following the collective agreement and offering mentorship opportunities as well as incentives to keep members involved.

The local presidents were officially sworn in by President Smokey Thomas and 1st Vice-President Treasurer Eddy Almeida.
