After three days of mediation starting Friday, talks broke down today after the employer and College presidents declared an impasse and refused any job security language that would clear the path to a settlement and end the strike.
A detailed breakdown is coming this afternoon. The mediator-imposed media black out is lifted, effective immediately.
Our coordinated pressure has been able to push concessions off the table. To win language that actually saves jobs – protecting our work from contracting out and from management doing support staff work – rather than just streamlining layoffs, we are going to need to keep up the pressure and be prepared to escalate.
As we enter our third week on the lines, job security remains a critical concern amidst ongoing sector-wide layoffs, campus closures, and emerging concerns about the scope of contracting out being explored by colleges.
