Union trustee vacancy for Healthcare of Ontario Pension Plan (HOOPP) Board of Trustees
The Pension Liaison Committee invites you or someone you know to get involved with HOOPP by applying to become an OPSEU/SEFPO appointed trustee on the HOOPP Board of Trustees for a 3 year period.
With the challenges facing defined benefit pension plans, we need people who have a firm and deep commitment to the labour movement and union principles.
Time off is provided, and expenses are reimbursed by the pension plan according to the pension plan’s and OPSEU/SEFPO’s policies. The successful candidate must be willing to sign a letter of agreement that they will follow OPSEU/SEFPO policy.
The successful applicant must be an active member of the HOOPP pension plan.
Who should apply?
We are looking for individuals who ideally have, or who are willing to gain:
- Knowledge and commitment to OPSEU/SEFPO’s beliefs and pension policy;
- An foundational understanding of defined benefit pension plans and the pension legislation that governs them;
- An understanding of basic actuarial principles, good corporate governance practices, basic investment principles and various types of investments.
Must haves for the position are:
- The ability to commit to preparing for and attending all meetings of the Board of Trustees and any committee meetings to which they are appointed;
- Attend and prepare for education and meetings with the Pension Liaison Committee as required;
- A strong desire to learn more about pension plans and the pension landscape, good governance practices, investments; and
- The ability to effectively communicate, ask questions and defend one’s position in a persuasive manner.
Applicants must also be actively participating in HOOPP and be a member in good standing with OPSEU/SEFPO. Applicants need not have experience in pensions, however a willingness to learn is imperative. Experience and participation in the union movement and/or their community will also be considered. Once appointed, training opportunities are provided by the plan.
