The BPS is Taking Over Toronto! Here’s What to Expect

by Alexandrea Seggewiss, Local 715, inSolidarity Committee

On November 14-16, members from the Broader Public Service’s multiple sectors will be descending on downtown Toronto for the division’s biennial conference and sector divisional meetings. Members can expect a fulsome conference built around this year’s theme of “Empowering Workers to Stand Together,” including speakers, presentations and panel discussions. The member planning team has considered whether you’re new to the conference or you’ve participated countless times before, members will leave feeling part of a greater movement.

Every sector can look forward to the Friday conference, where the dynamic Joanna Johnson (@unlearn16) will make an appearance as this year’s keynote speaker. Joanna is an educator, podcaster and TikToker from Ajax, Ontario who uses their platform to address the current political, social and pop culture climates. Joanna’s wit and sarcasm coupled with their enigmatic presence and delivery is sure to be a highlight of the day.

Members will have the opportunity to learn from each other during the “Organizing the BPS” panel, which will highlight mobilizing and organizing efforts, as well as successes throughout the different areas of the Broader Public Service. A special presentation and panel will address the widespread epidemic of toxic productivity giving members valuable “tips and tools” to overcome or avoid burnout. The ever-popular silent auction will resurface during the weekend – this time with a new beneficiary: Feed Ontario, an organization that supports food banks throughout the province. Finally, the “Speaker’s Corner” will be replaced with a “Rant Alley,” where you can let it all out Rick Mercer style.

Moving into Saturday and Sunday, first timers and veterans alike will take in sector-specific information along with elections for sector executives and other section related business. These days offer a way to make connections with sector members and empower them to share the information with their locals.

As the weekend unfolds, one thing is certain: the 2025 BPS Conference will be more than a series of meetings – it will be a celebration of solidarity, shared purpose, and collective strength. Whether through spirited debate, new friendships, or a spark of inspiration from the keynote stage, members will leave with renewed motivation to advocate for fairness, equity, and respect in their workplaces.

Don’t forget to take time to connect, share your stories, and recharge your union spirit — because when we stand together, we all move forward together.

See you in Toronto!
